As one of the most trusted Seattle flooring contractor and custom stairs providers, we see a lot of cases where people call us in to fix their staircases, but the damage is too far gone. Intensive repairs can take a lot of time and cost you extra, which is why we want to emphasize how important staircase maintenance is.

Hardwood flooring and stairs both require responsible owners that will make sure to keep track of the refinishing schedule and what kind of damage is happening to the stairs. Otherwise, your investment in these stairs can go to waste.

Daily Cleaning

Wooden staircases need extra attention during your daily cleaning chores to last as long. First, you should vacuum the stairs instead of sweeping if possible, since the movement of a broom can cause micro abrasions on the wood that builds up in the long term.

Second, as you go over the staircase, you should keep an eye out for surface damage. Check for dents, scratches, gouges, or water damage. If any of these issues are cropping up, especially water damage, you should address it as soon as possible.

Preventing Damage

A considerable part of wooden staircase maintenance involves preventing damage from occurring in the first place. Make sure you keep your pets from running up and down the stairs with long nails by ensuring claws are trimmed or by installing a pet gate on the stairs.

You should also avoid wearing high heels on the staircase and get some carpeting for the stairs if you really want to prevent damage. Harsh chemical cleaners are also a complete no on that front! Buy and use wood-friendly cleaners only.

Mold Removal

If you see mold developing on any portion of your wooden staircase, that’s an urgent red flag! The humidity in a coastal city like Seattle can cause major flare-ups of mold. However, for mild cases, mold is easily removed.

Over time, mold can decay the material it’s on and eventually cause it to degrade which is why you need to keep an eye out for it. It’s best to call in a hardwood refinishing and repair service if the case is too advanced.

Refinishing Services

There are times when your wooden staircase isn’t in too much trouble, but is definitely looking old and worn. Periodic refinishing is important to extend the life of your wood staircases and keep them looking fresh.
