Refinishing and sanding your floor will completely change the ambiance of your home. Once every scuff and scratch is gone, you will marvel at how clean and smooth your floor looks! But how exactly does the refinishing and sanding process go—and what should you expect?

Here are some of the things you should know before refinishing floors.

It Will Take a Few Days

The time it takes to completely sand and refinish floors depends on several factors. For example, a strong dust-removal system like the one we use can reduce the time taken during sanding. However, using an oil-based product during refinishing may lengthen the process as it takes longer to dry than a water-based product.

You should also consider the thickness of your floor’s outer layer. A thin layer requires more care when sanding, as you don’t want your floor to be removed altogether!

This is why we advise you to be patient during the sanding and refinishing process, as it will maximize the quality of the work.

Each Wood Stains Differently

After sanding your floor, we will apply a stain of your choice during refinishing. However, it’s important to note that the final color of your flooring will not match the color of the stain perfectly.

This is because the final color depends on the hardwood in your floor. For example, Brazilian Maple is lighter than Cherry—therefore, Cherry will appear darker than Brazilian Maple even if the same stain is used for both.

Wood Is Imperfectly Perfect

Wood comes in numerous colors and grain variations. It has naturally occurring knots, and cracks will appear as it expands and contracts seasonally. Therefore, when your hardwood flooring is sanded, the pattern will change.

Dustless Doesn’t Mean Zero Dust

Our top-of-the-line dustless refinishing system by Bona will contain most of the dust that results from sanding your floors. There will be minimal dust in the air, and you will be able to stay inside your home during the entire process.

However, if you have any dust allergies, we advise you to stay away from the rooms to be sanded until the refinishing process is complete.
