When The Kids Come Home… How to Protect Your Hardwood Floors From Heavy Foot Traffic

Posted on June 5, 2020 by fivestarwood

With the whole family practicing social distancing and spending days at a time lounging about in your home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, you might be worried that the increased foot traffic might wear out your hardwood flooring prematurely!

But don’t fret!

If you are a client of Five Star Hardwood Floor, we have a few tips and tricks that’ll help you maintain your wood floors and keep them in pristine condition!

Tips on Hardwood Floor Protection

–         Deep Clean Your Floors

Mop

Although you won’t be able to give your floors a daily deep cleaning, you can designate a single day of the week for it. Check all areas under the furniture legs for scratches and drag marks. Use a dry cloth mop to sweep away any dust and debris that may have built up on your floors, and use specific products to restore your floors to their former look.

–         Prepare the Entrance

Entrance

The floor by the front door receives the most damage from foot traffic. If you live in a climate that experiences its fair share of snow and rain, prepare the front entrance, so people don’t track any mud marks inside. Ask all household members to remove their shoes on the floor mat at the entrance and do not stay quiet if you see someone wear those shoes inside. Pebbles, dirt and mud can cause micro-scratches on the hardwood surface, which can make them look unappealing.

–         Protect Your Furniture

Bedroom

Add felt pads under the legs of your furniture as well as any stools and chairs that are used daily. And do not drag the furniture around if you need to move it, just pick it up instead. Dragging your furniture, even with the felt pads, will wear them out over time and will expose the bottoms of the furniture to the hardwood floor, causing deep marks and scratches.

–         Don’t Delay any Repairs or Refinishing

Hardwood Floor

Did someone accidentally spill a bucket of water in your living room? Are there large gouges or chips, or sun discoloration? Don’t delay these repairs and get in touch with us. With hardwood floors, it’s always a better option to contact the company that installed your floors, since they’ll know how to deal with the product better. When booking an appointment, provide them with all the information needed in terms of repairs, and be clear. This’ll allow them to come prepared for the task.
