Preparing Your Home for a Hardwood Floor Installation

Posted on July 13, 2020 by fivestarwood

You’ve signed on the dotted line, and your hardwood floor installers will be at your home next week. Now, all you have to do is sit back and wait for them to troop in!

As a residential company in Seattle that offers everything hardwood-related under the sun, Five Star Hardwood Floor wants nothing more than to keep you at ease.

However, keeping in mind how extensive the process of hardwood floor installation can be, we wouldn’t mind if you helped us out a little beforehand. Here are some things you can do to prepare your home for floor installation. It’ll make our job easier, more efficient, and quick!

–         Remove All Doors

Or just the door of that particular room that needs new flooring.

Typically, removing your doors is the first step we take to ensure that there’s no scratching or issues that hinder the floor laying process. If you’d instead do it yourself, keep all the hinge pins in a plastic bag, and layer the doors, marking them to know which goes where. Once the flooring is done, you can reinstall them yourself without worrying about any scratches.

–         Take Out the Baseboards

Depending on the type of baseboard you have, it’s best to remove the baseboard or shoe molding that lines it. If you have no shoe moldings, the baseboards can easily be pried out using a thin pry bar. Our reason for removing baseboards is that we want your floor to get as close to the wall as possible.

Many homeowners use this opportunity to install new baseboards that match the floor. If not, though, there’s no reason why you add back the same baseboards if they’re in good shape.

–         Take Away the Door Trim

You’ll need a carpenter’s help with this.

We recommend taking away the door trim because it gives your flooring a polished, uniform look once it’s installed. Most of the time, we have to cut the bottom of your molding around the door to install the floor, and while that doesn’t look half bad, some homeowners don’t like the look of it.

Removing the door trim will also give you a chance to re-trim the door or install new case moldings if need be.

Ready for the Floor Installation?

As far as providing dust control is concerned, Five Star Hardwood Floor uses specialized tools for dustless sanding and refinishing. So, there’s no worry about that.

All that’s needed is a little cooperation on your part, and we’ll do the rest.

So, let’s get to it. For all our clients in Redmond, Sammamish, Snohomish and surrounding areas who are waiting for a hardwood floor installation, we can wait to get started on your home floors, so you can have the perfect home you’d always wanted!
