5 Things That Damage Hardwood Floors

Hardwood flooring in dark, scratched wood.

When you have custom hardwood floors, you need to make sure you take care of them the right way. Although hardwood floors can last a long time, that doesn’t mean they’re impervious to harsh chemicals or sharp surfaces.

Make sure you keep your hardwood floors safe and durable by keeping them away from these items that commonly destroy the surface and integrity of wood flooring.

Harsh Liquid Cleaners

First of all, any kind of excess liquid is super bad for wood. Moisture seeps into floors and inflates the wood molecules. This eventually builds up over time and destroys the material. While surface polish can insulate the wood, it will break down with consistent use of harsh chemical cleaners.

There are cleaning solutions out there that are wood friendly, which don’t cause chemical damage in the same way.

Pet Nails and Stains

If you have pets, you may want to consult with your wood flooring service before you install hardwood flooring. You can’t control how pets will behave, especially if there are more than one. Any kind of running, fighting or even playing can cause tons of scratches on your hardwood flooring.

If you already have hardwood flooring, make sure all your pets nails are trimmed regularly, and that they’re trained to go outside or in a litterbox. Animal excrement will also cause chemical and liquid damage if it happens repeatedly.

Stilettos and High Heels

Even if you love to wear high heels, you may want to save putting them on after you exit the door. No matter how hard you try, the rigid sole and heel of these shoes will cause endless scuffs onto the hardwood floors.

In fact, skip wearing shoes altogether at home! Stick to soft slippers that will keep your feet cozy and let your hardwood floors breathe.

Rugs and Furniture

There’s no way you can maintain the quality of your hardwood flooring without rug and furniture pads. Both furniture and rugs can scratch and scuff the floor, causing it to lose its shine and creating marks that will need a hardwood floor repair and refinishing specialist.

Furniture and rug pads go under the surface and prevent these scratches from happening. Rubber and felt combination pads are the best for this purpose.

The Front Door

This may seem strange, but a front door that swings inwards and touches the floor will inevitably hurt the flooring. The constant use and singular motion cause a friction mark to form. Simply laying down a thin mat can fix this problem
