Hardwood floors are immensely popular among homeowners. They give your living space a luxurious look, and can last forever when taken care of properly.

But although hardwood floors are incredibly reliable, some common mistakes can easily lead to deterioration. Hardwood floors are an investment, so it’s essential to know how to protect them.

The following are some common mistakes you need to avoid to protect your hardwood floor:

Not Using Furniture Pads

If you want your hardwood floor to be destroyed due to scratches and scuffs, by all means, skimp on the furniture pads.

The furniture pads under your chairs, sofas, and tables prevent your floor from being damaged. Every time you sit on a piece of furniture that’s placed on top of a hardwood floor, it moves slightly. Over time, the furniture piece will keep on shifting, leaving an evident mark on the floor.

Not Sweeping the Floor

Dust, dirt, and other abrasive particles can settle on the floor and scratch the surface bit by bit, without you noticing it at first. If you’re not habitually sweeping and cleaning, this minor damage can quickly accelerate, leading to noticeable scratches.

Using Too Much Liquid Cleaner

Your liquid cleaner might be your best friend, but it’s your hardwood floor’s sworn enemy. While hardwood floors are manufactured and treated to be able to withstand a certain amount of wet cleaning, that doesn’t mean that you can drench your floor with liquid cleaner.

When you have to clean the floor with a liquid cleaner—which should not be more than once every four to six weeks, depending on foot traffic—start by working on smaller areas. Remember to use only a damp mop or a soft cloth.

Using A Sub-Standard Rug Pad

Rug pads are great for keeping area rugs in place. They prevent the rugs from sliding across the hardwood floor. However, using a low-quality rug pad can hurt the shine and quality of your hardwood floor. A mat backed by rubber can even cause some discoloration.

If you want to protect your hardwood floor, only use that combination felt and rubber pads under your area rugs.
